HHE Reveals Hope for Chinese Food in Portland. Kind of.

in Chinese

After my big adventure this past weekend in New Hampshire and my friend Ansley’s big adventure in San Francisco the same weekend, we had to trade stories.  Urgently.  It was a Happy Hour Emergency (HHE).  Part of this HHE was also that I started a new job and had to dish that as well.  So. Much. Talking. To do.

So we gabbed at Seres in the Pearl District.  Organic sustainable Chinese food (as stated on their website).  Please God, let there be a decent Chinese restaurant in Portland.

As it turns out, it is decent.  Ish.  The salad rolls are terrible.  Absolutely no flavor.  No flavor, dipped in what tasted like Adam’s unsalted peanut butter.

The potstickers had lots of juicy chicken and vegetables packed in the crispy little shells.  The crispy spring rolls were fine.  Tasty, but nothing spectacular.

And the General Tso’s Chicken was spicy as hell.  No, literally.  Spicy as hell.  At least when you swallow a big hunk of red chili pepper with the piece of chicken.

If you want salad rolls, stick with Bambuza.  Otherwise, Seres is a decent option for Chinese food.  And I mean, thank heavens.  Panda Express only gets a city so far.

How was the service? I went the first time, and I felt the same thing about the salad rolls. Then I decided to try it again and the service was pretty bad. This place just seems inconsistent overall.

Hi Erin –

The service was fine when we went. Everything was served promptly and accurately, so I can’t complain. Except for the salad rolls, which I will go on complaining about because they are AWFUL.
